Travelling from abroad

Getting to Swedish Lapland from Abroad

Reaching Lapland takes a little planning, but it’s easier than many think. The closest large hub is Umeå Airport, with connections to Stockholm and beyond. Smaller airports like Lycksele or Storuman may also be useful if you’re heading directly inland.

By Air

  • From the UK: Both Norwegian and SAS offer flights from London (via Stockholm) to Umeå or Lycksele.
  • From elsewhere in Europe/world: Fly to Stockholm Arlanda, then connect on a domestic flight north.

By Bus & Train

  • From Umeå, you can continue inland by regional bus (e.g., Regionbuss 31). These buses are comfortable, with Wi-Fi, charging points, and toilets. Tickets can be bought via the Tabussen.nu app.
  • Train options are also available from Stockholm to Umeå, with connections by bus further inland. See SJ.se for timetables.

Practical Tips

  • Buy bus tickets in advance through the app — cash is rarely accepted.
  • Always confirm bus stops with the driver; in rural areas you sometimes need to press the stop button in advance.
  • If you’re planning to explore multiple places in Lapland, renting a car in Umeå or Lycksele makes travel much easier.

Getting here may take a bit of effort, but the reward is clear: once you arrive, you’ll have endless access to lakes, forests, and some of Europe’s wildest landscapes.
